Learn the Skills

Fly fishing has more information out there than any one person can absorb. These are the resources I actually point people to.

Orvis Learning Center
The single best free resource on the internet for beginners. Videos, articles, and full curricula.

Pete Kutzer casting videos (Orvis YouTube) Pete is my friend and mentor and, in my opinion, the best casting instructor working. If you only watch one person, watch Pete.

Tom Rosenbauer podcast + videos
Tom has been teaching fly fishing longer than most of us have been alive. His how-to videos on the Orvis channel and his podcast are gold.

Animated Knots
The fastest way to learn a clinch knot, a surgeon's knot, or anything else you'll actually use. Better than any book or video I've found.

Gear

I don't sell gear. I don't take commissions. These are just the places I actually shop and the kits I actually recommend.

Orvis Encounter Outfit
If you're buying your first rod, this is what I'd get you. Rod, reel, line, and everything you need to start, at a price that doesn't require an explanation to your spouse.

Redington and Sage
Great next-step brands once you know
what you like.

Winston Rod Co.
My personal favorite, and worth it if you're ready to invest in a rod you'll fish forever.

Local Shops

Wellsboro and the Pine Creek watershed have some of the best fly shops and outfitters in the state. Support them.

Slate Run Tackle Shop
Orvis-endorsed, right on Pine Creek, and the best place to check stream conditions and hatch charts before you head out. Ethan and the crew know this water better than anyone.

TCO Fly Shop
I worked here for twelve years. Locations across Pennsylvania. Great gear, great people.

Nesmuk
The outdoor shop in downtown Wellsboro. Not exclusively fly fishing, but a great spot for cast iron, wool, boots, and everything you need to spend a day in the woods.

On the Water

Wellsboro and the Pine Creek watershed have some of the best fly shops and outfitters in the state. Support them.

Stream conditions & hatch charts
I don't maintain these; Slate Run Tackle Shop does, and they do it better than anyone. Check their site before you drive out.

PA Fish & Boat Commission
Licenses, regulations, and stocking schedules.

On Community & Giving Back

Project Healing Waters
Fly fishing for veterans. I'm getting involved locally and can point you to the nearest chapter if you're a vet or want to volunteer.

Trout Unlimited
The reason we still have fishable water. Join your local chapter.

“Shane is an amazing teacher and fisherman. He’s patient, funny, and helps however he can.”
