ABOUT SHANE (CLEM)

Fly fishing has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Raised in a family that valued hunting, fishing, and the outdoors, I learned the art of fly fishing from my grandfather on the small streams and ponds surrounding Pennsylvania's Grand Canyon region. Those experiences taught me not only how to fish, but also the importance of respecting the outdoors, sharing knowledge with others, and passing these traditions on to future generations.

Today, I spend as much time as possible exploring Pennsylvania's wild trout waters, particularly the remote mountain streams of Tioga County. Some of my favorite days are spent on the water with my wife and two daughters, passing along the same appreciation for fly fishing and the outdoors that was instilled in me at a young age. When opportunities arise, I also enjoy traveling west to fish the rivers of Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming.

As an instructor, I find great satisfaction in helping new and experienced anglers discover the sport and build the skills and confidence to enjoy it for a lifetime. Whether you're picking up a fly rod for the first time or looking to refine your technique, my goal is to create a welcoming learning environment where you can develop your abilities, deepen your connection to the water, and experience the many rewards that fly fishing has to offer

HOW I TEACH

Simple, minimal, and back to basics.

Fly fishing has a way of collecting complexity: twelve rods, thirty flies, forty-dollar tippet, and a chest pack that weighs more than the fish. That's not how I learned, and it's not how I teach. My goal is to get you fishing on your own, with gear you can afford and skills you can trust.

Classes are shorter than most (three hours or so, not six). Groups stay small. We cover what you'll actually use: casting, reading water, knots, one fly you can catch fish on almost anywhere (Hint: it’s a Pheasant Tail), and we spend more time on the water than in front of a whiteboard.

WHAT I OFFER

(Beginner to Advanced)

Private instruction. One-on-one or small group, built around you. Duration, location, and pace are flexible — an hour of casting on the lawn, a half-day on Pine Creek, a two-part class split across a weekend. Whatever fits.

Group classes at partner locations. Beginner casting at Hotel Manor, winter fly tying with This Is My Quest, and other events with local partners throughout the year. Check the Events page for what's on the calendar.

Custom instruction for special populations. I've worked with veterans, families, and folks with special needs. Reach out, and we'll build something that works.

Reach out for pricing. Rates depend on time, location, and group size; happy to talk it through.
